T-Mobile G1 my future phone?

Image stolen from Engadget

T-Mobile is having a press conference right now, and they announced the T-Mobile G1, which uses google’s android platform. I already use T-Mobile, so I don’t care about being locked down to T-Mobile, since I don’t currently have to pay the bill. I’d pay for the phone though, and maybe pay to add unlimited internet to the plan.

The phone will be available on October 22nd, and will sell for $179 with a two year contract. Full specs below.

- Amazon mobile music store (press release) preloaded on the G1.
- Built in keyboard. Google Maps. Android Market, YouTube
- Launch on October 22nd
- No tethering option
- SIM-locked to T-Mobile
- Read Word, PDF, Excel files. No exchange compatibility, but 3rd parties could bring it.
- GMail is push, IMAP is pull
- No desktop application to sync
- Interface video
- Specs: 480×320 screen, 3.1MP camera, 5hrs talk time, 1GB MicroSD card preinstalled, GPS, accelerometer. Wi-Fi. 3G. Bluetooth.
- $179 with 2 year contract

The press conference will be available for online viewing, after the press conference is over. Go here to view it or refresh until you can view it.

Update
You new customers are lucky bastards, because if I want to upgrade my phone to it, I would have to pay $299. No point in pre-ordering it, since it looks like if I want it, I’ll have to pay $299 + $25 or $35 monthly data fee. Oh yeah its $299 after a $100 online discount. Still has a two year contract. Looks like they want to rip existing customers off, bastards.

You qualify for the best upgrade price based on the time since your last upgrade and rate plan qualification:

11 months if you are on a one-year service agreement, or 22 months if you are on a two-year service agreement.
A qualified rate plan is $29.99 or greater with a single line, or $49.99 or greater on a shared family plan.
You must sign a new two-year service agreement each time you upgrade. Of course, if you do not want to sign a new service agreement, you can always purchase a new phone at full price. The choice is yours!

FAQ from their website. Hmm not sure if I’ve had my current phone for 11 months… Maybe it’ll break before then and I can get the G1 for $179. Or is it 22 months? Not sure if my phone is on a one year or two year agreement, looks like I might have to shell out $299 for a fucking phone, still less then what my uncle payed for his very first 4 GB iPhone, with a contract.

Hmm might be better off getting my own plan, or getting an iPhone, but I don’t really like AT&T. Not sure what I’ll do, ahh well I don’t really go anywhere, don’t need a new cell phone, or a monthly bill.
