Freezes
If your computer is freezing, it could possibly be a hardware problem. My system was freezing, not sure if I fixed it or not.
I did a memtest, ran it for over 2 hours no errors. So I thought it was the ntfs-3g driver, so I tried using ntfs resize, and it got an error. Was going to use ntfs resize, so I could make another partition and copy the data to it, and then resize the new partition and use the rest of the drive.
Something I read said to do a defrag, so I booted up into windows, started a defrag. After a while my whole computer froze, so it isn’t a linux problem. So it appears as it is a hard drive problem, so I ran seatools on my 300 GB hard drive, got some error, but I think it was a program error. So I tried running seatools on my other hard drive, and it froze. So I then download Hiren’s boot cd, which can be found on filemirrors.com. It includes mhdd, you can just download mhdd, and put it on a floppy or cd, I put Hiren’s boot cd on a thumb drive, instructions here.
I ran mhdd on my 160 GB hard drive, which is the one that froze in seatools. Also my 160 GB hard drive, has linux and windows on it. It wouldn’t make sense for my system to freeze if the other drive had an error, would make more sense if its getting a read error on the hard drive the os is on.
After mhdd ran, I ran seatools again. Seatools found no errors on my 160 GB hard drive, so I’m assuming mhdd fixed the 53 or 54 errors it found. But then I rebooted and noticed that my computer wasn’t detecting my SATA hard drive, the 300 GB drive. So I opened up my computer everything looked fine, tried a different SATA cable same problem, plugged it into the other SATA connection and it worked. It seems as though my onboard SATA has problems, so I’m going to buy a PCI express SATA 2 card.
When I booted linux it started a fsck scan, which obviously means mhdd did something. Fsck fixed some problems, and then rebooted, and linux loaded as usual. System seems faster after doing all of this though. Hopefully its fixed now. I will know if its fixed in a day or two.
