Ahh now I know why my nokia e63 has poor battery life for me

May 31st, 2009 admin Comments off

Optimal conditions would consist of but not limited to; adequate connection to your service provider as the more the device has to work to keep a good connection, it will drain the battery more, using other types of connection such as Bluetooth can affect the battery life and optimal usage. I recommend turning off the Bluetooth and not accessing any internet services through your provider to see if this assists in battery life.

The up to 18 days of standby is if the phone is operating under optimal conditions. Which mine isn’t… I have crappy signal in basement. So I guess its working harder to try and connect, that would make sense, as I do loose connection a lot in basement, works for texting sometimes. Just put it in offline mode, now it won’t try to connect to t-mobile.. Also turned bluetooth off. Now it should last more then 2 or 3 days.

Nokia Ovi Store Launch Is A Complete Disaster – washingtonpost.com

May 26th, 2009 admin Comments off

Nice guess the Ovi store opened today but doesn’t work. Installing the app on my phone, according to their blog, people using the app on their phone can connect. I get blank page in browser. Hmm maybe the store works in firefox, maybe it isn’t compatible with Safari, that’s nice if that’s the case… Nice nokia, your store doesn’t work in safari. Real nice. Can’t use it on phone, because it can’t find my router, says “No wlan found”. Whatever. Ahh it works on phone now… After installing the store app you have to reboot. Guess phone wasn’t started all the way yet.

Hmm the washigntonpost article says you can’t login with existing account, I can.

Works in Safari after clearing cache.

Looks like a useless store, at least for me. There’s no content for Nokia E63.

Nokia Ovi Store Launch Is A Complete Disaster – washingtonpost.com

Update
I clicked the pocket express banner thing on the store homepage, and says “Sorry, this item is no longer available.”. Haha this store blows. I can only look at stuff if I’m not logged in, otherwise it hides everything, because nothing is compatible with my Nokia E63.

Update
It works now. I can actually see apps when logged in now. Haven’t downloaded anything yet.

Don’t need new mac yet

May 22nd, 2009 admin Comments off

My old mac mini still works and is fast enough for me. The only thing I can’t do is play newer mac games. I’ll just play games on my 360 and wii for now. Maybe I’ll consider getting new mac if starcraft 2 is ever released. Maybe I’ll buy an expensive SSD drive to speed it up even more. The 7200 rpm drive I have in it is fast enough though, so don’t really need a new drive. I will be getting a new superdrive, so I don’t have to use external drive to burn DVDs. Could always buy a cheap PC for gaming, if I want to play computer games.

eBay Bucks

May 21st, 2009 admin Comments off

I signed up for eBay Bucks yesterday, so far I’ve earned $0.90. Now I’m going to buy most of the stuff I buy on eBay, I like getting some of the money back. Should of signed up before buying linksys phone adapter thing.

Vitelity rocks

May 20th, 2009 admin 1 comment

Signed up for vitelity earlier today, mainly so I can mess around with asterisk. I really like their customer site, under support they have all the settings you need to get asterisk working. I’m using ubuntu with freepbx. Uncle set me a link to this script, which install everything you need. That’s for an old version of ubuntu but it still works. Using my cell phone with asterisk works fine for me, using a Nokia E63, already has SIP compatibilities built in. Might switch our home number to vitelity, will talk to mom about it later. Bought a Linksys VOIP SPA2102 SIP ATA Adapter Sunrocket UNLOCKED on ebay, guess if I don’t switch her over, I can buy a cheap phone to plug into it. Only bad thing about the GE 28021EE1 on frys.com is the shipping is more then the phone, shipping is $8, phone is only $4.99, not sure if they shipped uncle’s phone yet… Oh yeah and frys.com charges tax, at least in my state. Probably better off buying a V-Tech CS5111 5.8GHz Cordless Phone from amazon.

Samba De Amigo

May 19th, 2009 admin Comments off

Samba De Amigo is a pretty fun game for less then $10, I got it on a gold box offer, after tax was less then $10, now it’d be a little more then $10 after tax. Only rhythm game I have. Well worth the $7.58 I payed for it.

Dell Latitude 2100

May 19th, 2009 admin Comments off

Hmm dell just released a new netbook that you can configure with a touch screen, and you can get it with either ubuntu or windows. Hmm when clicking link it wants to know my segment though… I guess I can’t buy it then. I’m not in any of those segments.

Hmm just noticed the Dell Mini 10v is only $299… Damn it, not even going to open aspire one now, just going to send it back. You can get either ubuntu or windows on it. Wait if you add 6 cell battery same price, but you can get wireless N, so better deal, no need to use USB wireless N if you want wireless N. You can get it built in on the dell…

Moblin beta

Intel released a beta of their linux based OS for netbooks today. Maybe I’ll try that on Aspire One after it comes.

New mac mini looks easy to upgrade

May 18th, 2009 admin Comments off

Might end up getting a new mac mini, and upgrading the ram myself. I upgraded my old one without a putty knife, though I damaged the case by doing it the way I did it. So maybe I’ll have to buy a putty knife if I do it myself.

Update
Maybe I won’t get a new mac, as my current mac mini just froze again. Seems to freeze to often, more then I remember my PC with ubuntu crashing. I might decide to try ubuntu on the aspire one I ordered before sending it back, maybe I’ll keep it, if it doesn’t freeze as much as mac.

Acer Challenges Rivals With Larger Netbook — PCs — InformationWeek

May 18th, 2009 admin Comments off

Nice looks like acer is making bigger netbook with bigger keyboard. Probably won’t buy it though. Will be either canceling or sending back aspire one that I bought though. Nice retail suggested price is $350… So the price of the one I bought might go down. Make sure if you buy one you order from amazon, so you can use it for a week or two and then send it back, you have 30 days to send it back.

$199 Acer 1gb Netbook w/ 120gb Hard Drive

May 18th, 2009 admin Comments off

Just got an email from compusa saying they have Acer 1GB Netbook w/ 120GB Hard Drive for $199. Kind of got ripped of, to bad I can’t cancel amazon order. Will have to send it back when it arrives. Guess the screen is smaller, still think I’ll send Aspire one that I bought on amazon back without opening it. Changed my mind, after I ordered it, never really wanted it that bad. Rather have my money back. Next time I’ll select three day shipping, then maybe I can cancel the order, if I change my mind…

Update
Emailed amazon to see if its possible to cancel anyways, should of emailed them last night.

ASUS Eee PC 901

May 17th, 2009 admin Comments off

Thinking about buying an ASUS Eee PC 901, or some other netbook with linux. Had aspire one, but that one had small SSD low ram, wasn’t worth it. Now there cheaper and better, Eee PC 901 even has a better battery then my aspire one had. Would be nice to have bigger screen then touch to browse web while watching tv, and a full featured browser. Maybe apple will release a new iPod touch with bigger screen… Probably not anytime soon. I think I rather buy a netbook from amazon, easy return policy, fast free two day shipping. Depends if ubuntu will run on this without any problems, need to look into that. Ubuntu netbook page. Hmm looks like the HP works pretty good on it. Wait that HP model that works, can’t even find it. But the 1000 that HP lists on site has a sound bug. Doesn’t look to hard to fix, HP mini has real HD and bigger screen then the Eee PC 901. Hmm strange their site says different then what amazon has… Pass on HP mini, want one that comes with 6 cell battery. Hmm maybe this aspire one.

Update
Bought Acer Aspire One AOD150-1165 10.1-Inch Sapphire Blue Netbook – 6 Cell Battery instead of ASUS Eee PC 901. Will put ubuntu on it, once I get it. Same price that I payed for old aspire one that had crappy SSD drive, this one has a real hard drive. Hmm maybe I should of bought that newegg DIY bundle instead, ahh well I can buy that next month. haha. Or send netbook back and buy it. Don’t want that bundle, rather get a quad core processor, if I get AMD. So I’d have to manually pick everything out. Ahh well I have 30 days to try netbook out, if I don’t like it I can send it back.

Update
If I get it and it doesn’t work, or ubuntu is to much of a pain to get working on it, I’m going to send it back to amazon and get refund, have 30 days. Also I’ve read that acer’s supports sucks, and to get an rma is a pain, also heard from somebody else that somebody they know has an acer and they break down a lot. Must of got lucky with last Aspire One, good thing I sold it on ebay.

Decent newegg bundle

May 16th, 2009 admin Comments off

Newegg has a DIY bundle for $330 or $295 after rebates. I like the case they put in that bundle, and I like the fact that they put a bundle together with pretty much everything you need. Well you might need CD drive, I have plenty of those. Not really needed anymore, can boot ubuntu from USB drive. But I do have a spare DVD burner in enclosure that I’d put in it, if I bought that bundle. Not sure if I should buy it or not, if there’s no tax maybe. With shipping its $354.02. Hmm probably no tax, just $24 shipping. Guess turning the rebates in might be worth it to get shipping money back, if you ever get rebates back. Decent price for a custom built machine with no windows on it.

I could always get a dell laptop with ubuntu on it, not this month though, would want to configure it, add more ram, better processor, better battery, and bluetooth. Not sure if I want new desktop or laptop or wait and get iMac. Or I could get a new mac mini, not sure if the “improvements” are much of an improvement over the mac mini I have. Not sure if I’d notice anything, maybe if they start offering 4 GB of ram with $599 one.

Update
Still haven’t decided, might buy the bundle though, as newegg accepts paypal now.

Update
Not buying bundle. Might buy an iMac from newegg in future though, no tax is nice.

Which computer to buy….

May 14th, 2009 admin Comments off

People like to ask me that question.

She wants a computer she can surf the internet on, download music and photos, burn CD’s or DVD’s, email, use excell and word on.

Computers that would work:

Mac Mini
Make sure you add 2 GB of memory, you can configure the cheapest one. Oh yeah but you’ll have to buy a monitor and stuff too…

Dell Inspiron 530s
I’d recommend getting one with a monitor. They have better specs. Vista is a memory hog from what I’ve heard. Make sure you get Intel Core 2 Duo for the processor.

Dell Popular Laptop Deals
Any of those would work, just make sure you get an Intel Core 2 duo processor and a 9 cell battery.

If you want to buy it locally, then Best Buy has some computers that will work too.

Dell – Inspiron Desktop with Intel® Coreâ„¢2 Duo Processor E7400

Gateway – Desktop with AMD Phenomâ„¢ Triple-Core Processor 8400

HP – Pavilion Desktop with AMD Phenomâ„¢ X4 9550 Quad-Core Processor

Compaq – Presario Desktop with AMD Athlonâ„¢ X2 4450e+ Dual-Core Processor

Dell – Inspiron Desktop with AMD Athlonâ„¢ X2 5000+ Dual-Core Processor

eMachines – Desktop with AMD Athlonâ„¢ X2 Dual-Core Processor 4050e

Pretty much any desktop will work… Just make sure it has at least 2 GB of ram, if buying a PC.

Logitech Harmony 550

May 13th, 2009 admin Comments off

Got a refurbished Logitech Harmony 550 remote today, ordered it from amazon. Hmm must of been on sale when I bought it, I got it for $49.99, one day shipping is only $3.99 if prime member, total after tax and shipping was a little less then $59.99. Nice only having one remote instead of three, it can also control xbox 360. Easy to setup, just plug it into your computer by USB, and install their software, you just need to know the model numbers of all your stuff. Well the 360 doesn’t really have a model number, so you just put Xbox 360 in for it. You can get the Logitech Harmony 510 for $49.97, but I rather have the refurbished 550 for $49.99 at the time I bought it.

Spore is coming to Wii

May 13th, 2009 admin Comments off

Doesn’t look like I need a new mac, if I ever want to play Spore. Spore has some bad reviews anyways, and some nasty DRM. No release date yet, so you can’t pre order it yet.

Virtual Villagers works in crossover games

May 9th, 2009 admin Comments off

virtual_villagers

Didn’t know there was a mac version, as I tried the trial from amazon games. Bought it on sale for $0.98. They charge $20 on their site, so no point in buying it directly, rather use windows version in crossover games. And save about $19. Funny new review says amazon’s downloader thing froze their computer. Haha that’s what you get for using a PC, oh wait this is for PC only. Amazon downloader works perfectly in crossover games, they should give ubuntu a try, and get free trial of crossover games, doubt it’d crash whole computer if it crashed, just crossover games. Or better if you use ubuntu, try wine, its free and based on crossover games…

Time to look for new bank?

May 7th, 2009 admin Comments off

Wamu is a dick, and is charging me for my savings account. Though their site says if you transfer a minimum of $5 per month, then they won’t charge you, but the fuckers charged me, and still haven’t given refund. Usually they charge you then give you refund, this time it looks like the fuckers lied and took $5 for good. So took all money out of savings account and put it in checking account. Thinking I should switch banks, not sure I’m liking these fucktards anymore. Fucking lying assholes.

Looks like if I open a checking account with Bank of America, the monthly maintenance fee is waived. Though says other things cost money… Think if you call them you have to pay. Hmm looks like Bank of America has a free savings account too. Doesn’t make sense to pay for a savings account, at least not to me. Kind of hard to save money, when they charge you for the account, better off getting a safe and saving it that way, then paying for a fucking savings account.

Forgot about SSI, I have direct deposit setup with wamu, don’t want to have to contact them or set that up again. To lazy, better just keep wamu, won’t have savings account, maybe it’ll close by its self. Since there’s no money in savings account. If they take money out of checking account, I’ll have to sue the fuckers for $5 or $10.

Easy way to copy iTunes music to Nokia E63

May 3rd, 2009 admin Comments off

doubletwist

Just use doubletwist, works in OS X and I think on windows. I have my phone connected by USB right now, might just say generic device if you put the micro SD card in a card reader. You could use Finder, but that might be a pain if you just want to copy a playlist, instead of all your music, all my music won’t fit on 4 GB microSDHC card anyways.

Update
Another way is to use Nokia Multimedia Transfer.
