Some of A Small Orange servers were compromised

July 9th, 2009 admin Comments off

Dear ASO Customer,

Last night, several of our hosting servers were compromised and a number of customer accounts were deleted. While not all customers are affected, we feel that all customers should be aware of the incident.

The attack happened through a compromised password/computer used by one of the techs to access/support/maintain servers. We’ve disabled access from that computer and account until we can investigate the matter thoroughly.

The servers affected were server names starting with the letters A through D. We’ve posted a notice on our customer forums and will update it with more information:

http://forums.asmallorange.com/index.php?showtopic=12908

If your server isn’t listed, your site wasn’t affected by this.
If you don’t know the server your site is hosted on, you can use our server lookup tool:

http://www.asmallorange.com/extras/server.php

Based on the log data, it does not appear that customer password files were downloaded or accessed, or that any data was transferred. Instead, the attacker simply deleted the customer accounts, and on some servers, critical system files. If you account is on a server that was attacked, we recommend changing your passwords as soon as you have access to your site again.

Our overnight and morning teams have been restoring data, but this is a slow process. For customers affected, please be patient as we work to get through this problem. We understand that many of you host sites for your clients and many of you run your website as a business. Our support team is working as hard as they can to get the data back online as soon as possible.

Once this is behind us, we will be reviewing many of the security systems currently in place and start building improvements. We certainly don’t want an incident like this to happen again. We sincerely regret that this happened, and apologize to all customers who were affected by this.

Thanks for being our customer, and we appreciate your patience as we work to get this resolved.

Email I got from them.

WARNING: During a short period of time during the attack, your site may have been redirected to a malware page promoting a “Web Accelerator” program. This file contains a virus identified as “Backdoor.Win32.VanBot!IK.” Though the exposure time was very short, (less than 30 minutes) there is a possibility that users may have downloaded it. I would suggest informing your users of this and recommend that they run a virus scan and take measures to ensure their system is clean if they happened to download it.

That is on the forum post page, the server my site is on, wasn’t affected.

Oh yeah and by the forum post it says the tech’s computer had a virus, probably the same one. Stupid tech using windows, use linux or something. To improve the security, they could roll their own minimal linux distro, that could be run using virtual box, or vmware player, or parallels, or any other virtual machine program.

Making a full backup of my site so I can download it, cpanel lets you make full backups. Puts everything in a compressed file, so you don’t have to manually download everything.

Already get weekly mysql database backups using Wordpress Database Backup.

Got my camera

July 6th, 2009 admin Comments off

Got my Canon PowerShot SD780 IS today. You can see a ton of pics I took here with it.

A nice pic below that I took, you can see my nose hair without it being cropped, but I prefer to show you just my nose hair.

Update

Video taken with camera.

I took a video inside, but it doesn’t look very good. Maybe its just my room, where I was taking the video there isn’t a lot of light. If I took video by my computer it might be better looking.

Bought USB Wireless Lan 802.11N from monoprice

July 2nd, 2009 admin Comments off

The USB adapter I have from newertech, seems to be causing my mac to freeze up. Not using their driver though (can’t remember why I switched), using official ralink driver. Not sure if its the driver or the card, or both. The one on monoprice comes with a driver CD, says it works with OS X, so maybe it has driver on CD, or website to download driver from, don’t see it on their site. Not going to switch back to the newertech driver, pretty sure it was unstable, and its outdated. Don’t think I’ll buy anything from newertech again, I paid around 40 bucks for the USB adapter from newertech.

Magic Jack still doesn’t have my area code…

June 10th, 2009 admin Comments off

magic_jack_no_numbers

Looks like now they have no area codes available in WA. They let you change your number once for free, so I keep checking to see if a local number is available, have some 253 number, not my area code. No phone hooked up to it, nor is the computer turned on that its plugged into. Using virtualbox in ubuntu on a MSI Nettop 100, to run their bogus software. Don’t want to keep mac on 24/7, guess I could, not sure how stable the mac software is though. Not sure why I see ads on tv, since they don’t even offer area codes in my state anymore. Oh yeah I emailed them asking when my area code would be available, below is their response. Oh yeah to find their email, you have to search google, it is Dan@magicjack.com.

We apologize that your area code is not represented right now and we
are doing our best to add as many area codes as possible.
Sorry for the vague reply, but we will keep updating our lists as
fast as we can. Thank you.

Looks like their running out of numbers, and not adding anymore. Ahh well it was only around $30 on ebay. I should sell that linksys phone adapter I bought that I don’t need, was going to use it with vitelity, but changed my mind. Oh yeah you will be able to port a number to them “sometime in 2009″. Guess you don’t really need a local number, but then people that use the shitty local service, will get charged when calling you.

Instead of everyone switching to magic jack, how about get a skype phone adapter, both require your computer to be on 24/7, difference is skype is free. If everyone was using skype, you wouldn’t need to pay anything, its free to call skype people from skype. Then they’d probably start charging for it. Or pay more and get something that doesn’t need your computer.

Apple’s annual developers conference: Don’t expect a new iPhone – San Jose Mercury News

June 7th, 2009 admin Comments off

That’s because many observers don’t expect a new iPhone will be unveiled. The Cupertino company’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference is about software, not gadgets. Some prognosticators say a new device – perhaps even a new family of iPhones – will be launched later this month or in July.

Good cause I don’t care about the iPhone. Not buying any phone that is locked down to a service, hell I don’t even need a cell phone or any phone for that matter. If I had to pay bill, I’d have no cell phone.

Might not have to buy OS X Snow Leopard, as I’ll eventually get an iMac. Doubt Snow leopard will be released immediately.

Funny how everyone is expecting hardware, does anyone realize the name of it is “World Wide Developer Conference”? Sounds like software, not hardware, at least to me.

A number of analysts expect Apple to hold a special event in coming weeks to launch a new family of iPhones, and to announce lower prices.

Ahh there you go iPhone humpers. Maybe they’ll lower price of iMac, still have to wait 2+ months, will want some money left in bank, and will be buying refurbished.

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster speculates a device that is somewhat larger than the iPod Touch will be launched in the first quarter of next year.

That is what I want, then I won’t bother getting a new touch if they make a new one. I still have the first generation touch, waiting for third generation or tablet like mac.

Got Trendnet router today

April 23rd, 2009 admin Comments off

hni_0043

Got my Trendnet TEW-652BRP today. Haven’t had any problems with it yet, updated the firmware, which adds the ability to set static IPS to different MAC addresses. Well had one problem, put my mac’s MAC address in wrong, so I had no internet, but setting the IP manually let me get to router’s config, took a while to figure that out. Thought I put in everything right. Thought MAC address filtering made it so people couldn’t access router at all, it should disconnect not allowed MAC addresses. Not sure if all routers let you get to config page if the MAC isn’t allowed, maybe its a setting, you can probably disable router page from all wireless users. Oh yeah it seems to be smaller then the D-Link router it replaced, not much smaller though. Oh yeah you have to use firefox to update firmware, didn’t work in Safari, didn’t even seem to send the firmware using Safari, maybe it works in older Safari. Still using Safari 4 beta. The login seems to use some javascript encryption thing too, so don’t bother telling 1password to remember password, won’t work. Hmm guess you can’t tell it to not allow wireless clients to access router config. Pretty sure you can with DD-WRT, don’t think that works with this router, don’t care. Trendnet’s firmware seems to be stable, at least so far. Oh yeah the firmware tells you the router uptime too, just like DD-WRT, D-Link didn’t say that.

Old bike

April 19th, 2009 admin Comments off

I got a mountain bike a long time ago for free, was given to me by one of my Uncle’s, the one on my dad’s side. Went to walmart and got helmet and tire pump. Took it for a short ride, easy to go down hills, was to weak to ride it all the way up the hill. The chain fell off on the way up the hill too. If I had an electric bike I probably would of made it all the way up, not really a steep hill, it goes in a fucking circle, so if you walk your bike up, don’t bother going in the circle, unless your to weak to pick bike up. Rather carry it up some short steep hills then walk around a fucking circle. Don’t have to carry it much, just a little anyways. Oh yeah saw one of those e-zip bikes at the wlmart we went to, we didn’t go to the same one as yesterday. They had one for $399, $350 on their site, so guessing if they had the $299 one, it’d be $350 at the store. Probably won’t bother getting electric bike, one reason being is they weigh a lot, so if you have to peddle you won’t be able to go very far without getting exhausted. I have bad judgment, so I’d end up pedaling it a lot probably, and I’d need two batteries cause I’m a fat ass. The batteries are $129.99 on amazon.

Oh yeah will probably take my current bike to shop and have em fix it up, or see if they think I should just buy new one. Bicycle Butler is where I’ll take it, says on their site they can rebuild em, build you a custom bike, looks like they pretty much do everything that can be done to bike. Wonder if they can turn it into an electric bike, haha. It’d probably be cheaper, I think you can buy electric bike kits. Hmm bikes don’t really look that hard to work on, maybe I should just buy parts myself, and do it all myself, then I’ll have something to do all day, other then sitting on ass. Wait I can sit on ass while I very slowly work on it, take about 2 hours to remove one bolt… haha, better off taking it to shop, it’d take me to long, I’d be to busy staring at it. Hmm did google search for “electric bike kit”, looks like those kits cost more then $299.

Could just have two bikes, one electric and one non electric, only ride electric when I want to go up a hill. Hmm wonder if it’d make it up a big hill without pedaling. Probably not, so I’d be going in reverse, haha. Oh yeah and I wonder if you can modify one of those e-zips to have 4 or more batteries, probably 8 would be good, would be expensive though to do that, maybe buy another battery every month. Then maybe it’d make it up a big hill. Probably be cheaper just to save money and buy more expensive electric bike if I wanted 8 batteries…

Hmm wonder if any of those e-zip scooters can have two batteries. Think I rather have scooter and non electric bike. And those aren’t the big scooters that you need license to drive.

Bought Airfoil

April 17th, 2009 admin Comments off

Just bought Airfoil for $25. There’s a linux version of Airfoil Speakers, which works in ubuntu. So now I can use iTunes instead of MPD for playing music through receiver. Playing videos doesn’t seem to work very good, there’s a 2 second delay, if you read their FAQ. Not a big deal. iTunes through receiver without airport express is good enough for me. Could output internet radio to it too, like pandora.com.

Oh yeah to get it to work in ubuntu, you need to install libmono-cli or something like that. Wait its “libmono2.0-cil” or “libmono1.0-cil”. I have both installed. Also have “libmono0″ installed. and a whole bunch of others, just use sudo aptitude install libmono2.0-cil. And hopefully it’ll install everything it needs..

airfoil

Update
To get airfoilspeakers to work in ubuntu run the following command:
sudo aptitude install libavahi1.0-cil libmono-winforms2.0-cil libmono-system-runtime2.0-cil

Had to buy VLC Remote App for iPod touch

April 9th, 2009 admin Comments off

The free version doesn’t let you browse, so I had to buy it for $0.99. Boxee is to buggy for me in ubuntu, so not going to bother with it anymore. Using MPD(music player daemon) for music playing, using a client called Theremin on Mac, and there’s a free App called MPoD for the iPod touch.

Bought a new desk

March 15th, 2009 admin Comments off

Just bought a Studio RTA Malibu Glass Computer Desk 29 3 4 H x 46 7 8 W x 25 3 8 D Pewter from officedepot.com. My corner desk is kind of annoying, has a shelf thing on the bottom, which makes it hard to vacuum under, and will need new desk anyways, once I get an iMac.

Stupid google ads or Safari 4 beta

March 8th, 2009 admin Comments off

stupid_googleads

Was wondering why I’ve been getting ads like the above, so I opened firefox, and that x has some javascript “javascript:nop();”, well I finally got an ad like that in firefox, except it actually displayed the ad, rather then a x, its an ad with javascript, with little arrow things to scroll through em. Looks like google either needs to update there code, or apple needs to fix Safari’s 4 javascript engine, or maybe both. Well most people that visit this site probably aren’t using Safari 4 beta, so it doesn’t really matter.

Linux distros tested on Acer Aspire One

March 7th, 2009 admin Comments off

Currently I’ve tested the following distros on the acer aspire one:

Ubuntu & Xubuntu
Xubuntu is faster, both are easy to get working, just download a custom kernel from aspireonekernel.com.

Dream Linux
Currently that’s what I have on it, everything seems to work, didn’t do any tweaking. Seems somewhat slow, probably because I haven’t done any tweaking, to bad it doesn’t do it for me. Used the OEM installer, as I couldn’t see the buttons in the regular installer. I think I prefer xubuntu over this, so probably won’t tweak it. Perhaps I’ll try the recently released zenwalk linux 6.0.

Fuck it going to get iMac instead of mac mini

March 5th, 2009 admin Comments off

iMac is a better system then the mini, and well worth the extra amount. I’ll need a new desk if I want to use my other monitor though. Probably get the cheapest 24″ one, not sure though. Won’t be getting 8 GB of ram, that’s over $1,000 for just the ram… iMac’s are probably even harder then the mini to upgrade, I think I saw a guide on ifixit.com or something like that. But I won’t be opening it, maybe I’ll pay somebody in the future to upgrade it for me. Damn if you want faster processor you have to get more expensive one, wouldn’t mind a 3 GHz processor, don’t care about HD size. Maybe the $1,799 one then, almost 3 GHz, better video then the cheaper ones. Wait you can get $1,799 one with 3 GHz processor…

Update
Will probably order the $1,499 one from frys.com in May or June. I won’t be charged tax if I order from them…

Update
If you look at the design page for the iMac, you’ll notice it says “With iMac, details make all the difference. For example, because it’s made from a single sheet of aluminum, you won’t see any seams or screws except for a single compartment on the bottom that provides easy access to the memory slots.” Sweet so I can upgrade the ram in the future, when the price of 8 GB goes way down. Looked on ifixit.com, and you’ll see the memory compartment in step 4, the only step that matters to me.

Nokia 6086

May 29th, 2008 admin Comments off

I have to buy a damn USB cable for it, if I want to put any unsigned programs on my Nokia 6086 phone. The program is windows only, and bluetooth doesn’t work in parallels or virtual box. The USB cable isn’t very expensive on amazon, don’t buy from nokia, they want $50. The Nokia CA-53 Connectivity Cable is what I need. I need to use two programs, one called MobiMB v3.4 DP3 and the other BeHappy. Both can be found here. The BeHappy thing comes with an english readme, or you can use google translator to translate that link. Oh yeah my moms laptop doesn’t have bluetooth.

Update
Just tried vmware fusion, bluetooth works, but that mobi program doesn’t see the hidden folder. It only shows an inbox folder, I read that you need a usb data cable to see the hidden folder. So it looks like I still have to wait, until I get a data cable.

Mac on a stick

March 15th, 2008 admin Comments off

Since I have nothing better to do, I’m going to attempt at putting Mac OS Classic on a usb thumb drive. Basically the emulator and the required files, the emulator Mini vMac, is available for os x, windows, and linux. So I should put both the mac and windows version on my thumb drive. Wonder if simcity classic will run in that.

Mac on a stick how to page

Update
2263
Done looks like it works, that was easy and fast. Didn’t try the windows version of Mini Vmac yet though, not sure if it’ll work in wine. Can’t run simcity classic, not enough ram in emulator, have to use a different emulator.

Maybe I should upgrade the ram in my mac mini

January 19th, 2008 admin Comments off

Its only $48 from crucial for 2 GB of memory, the max my mini can have.

How to open the mac mini

They say you need two putty knifes, but probably possible with only one.
Don’t think we have any putty knives, my grandma might. Don’t have $48 either. The shipping is free, but after tax its $52.12. Still pretty cheap, cheaper then the memory in my other computer, and its not DDR2.
Just looked on apple’s site, if you configure the mac mini, they charge $150 if you want 2 GB of ram. I wouldn’t pay $150 for 2 GB of ram, that’s a rip off.

Update
Got it open without a putty knife, I did do a little damage to the bottom of the case. Don’t care though. It still works, and I don’t look at the bottom either, as it isn’t upside down all the time. The damage I caused to the case, actually made it so it will be easier to open in the future. Oh yeah and it still works, as I’m typing this from my mac.

Seagate false advertising settlement

October 22nd, 2007 admin Comments off

If you purchased a Seagate brand hard disc drive between March 22, 2001 and September 26, 2007, a proposed class action settlement may affect you. A hearing has been scheduled in San Francisco Superior Court to approve the settlement. Under the settlement, you may have the right to make a claim for cash or software. You also may choose to exclude yourself from the settlement. Alternatively, you may file written objections to the settlement and appear (or have your own attorney appear) at the court hearing. If the settlement is approved and you do not exclude yourself, you give up the right to sue for the claims the settlement resolves, and you will be bound by the terms of the settlement. To learn more about or exercise any of your rights, please read below and visit www.harddrive-settlement.com.

The lawsuit is Cho v. Seagate Technology (US) Holdings, Inc., San Francisco Superior Court, Case No. 453195. In the suit, the plaintiff alleges that in the sale and marketing of hard disc drives, Seagate stated that purchasers of the drives would receive approximately 7% more usable storage capacity than they actually received. Seagate has denied and continues to deny each and all of plaintiff’s claims, and denies that anyone has been harmed or deserves compensation. The Court has not made a decision on the merits.

You are a member of the settlement class if, between March 22, 2001 and September 26, 2007, you purchased in the United States a new Seagate brand hard disc drive from an authorized Seagate retailer or distributor, separately as a Seagate product that was not pre-installed into and bundled with a personal computer or other electronic device.

As part of the settlement, Seagate will make certain disclosures regarding the storage capacity of its retail hard drives.

In addition, if you submit a valid claim, you will receive free backup and recovery software, or a cash payment equivalent to five percent of the net amount you paid for the hard drive (excluding taxes or rebates). To receive the software or the cash payment, you must submit a claim form available at www.harddrive-settlement.com by March 10, 2008. You may submit a claim form for each qualifying drive you purchased. To obtain the cash payment, you must have purchased your drive before January 1, 2006 and you must submit appropriate documentation or the serial number for each drive.

If the settlement is approved, plaintiff’s counsel will apply for an award of attorneys’ fees, expenses and incentive awards not to exceed $1,792,000, to be paid separately from and in addition to the benefits available to settlement class members.

All claims of settlement class members which were or could have been asserted in the litigation, based upon the facts alleged in the litigation (as well as in a related case entitled Lazar v. Seagate Technology LLC, et al., San Francisco Superior Court, Case No. 439700; and California Court of Appeal, Case No. A116350) will be released. This means that if you do not exclude yourself from the settlement class, you will give up the right to sue for the claims the settlement resolves, and you will be bound by the terms of the settlement.

If you do not want to participate in this class action or be bound by this settlement you must exclude yourself from the settlement class by submitting a written request for exclusion which includes your full name and address and your request to be excluded from the class. Mail your request for exclusion to Hard Drive Settlement, c/o Rust Consulting, Inc., P.O. Box 1240, Minneapolis, MN 55400-1240. Your written request for exclusion must be received by December 21, 2007. If you exclude yourself, you will not receive the benefits of the settlement, and you cannot object to the settlement.

If you wish to object to the settlement, appear at the settlement hearing, have your own attorney appear at the settlement hearing, or intervene in the case, you must file your objection, request to appear, or request to intervene with the San Francisco Superior Court located at 400 McAllister Street, San Francisco, California 94102 and you must send copies to the attorneys for both parties. The plaintiff’s attorney is Brian R. Strange, Strange & Carpenter, 12100 Wilshire Boulevard, Suite 1900, Los Angeles, CA 90025. Seagate’s attorney is Peter S. Hecker, Heller Ehrman LLP, 333 Bush Street, San Francisco, CA 94104. For additional detailed instructions go to www.harddrive-settlement.com. All objections and requests to appear or intervene must be received by the court and attorneys by December 21, 2007.

DO NOT CONTACT THE COURT OR SEAGATE CONCERNING THIS NOTICE OR THIS LAWSUIT. If you would like more information about this notice or this case, please visit www.harddrive-settlement.com. If you do not have internet access, you may request additional information by mail from counsel for plaintiff, as set forth above.

Seagate settlement

Looking at the online form, it looks like you can do it for each Seagate hard drive you bought between March 22, 2001 and September 26, 2007. I have two Seagate hard drives, both bought within that time period.

The online form says:

If you purchased more than one drive, submit a separate form for each drive. Your claim is subject to validation by Seagate. Your claim will not be processed until at least 30 days after final approval of the settlement. Final approval will not occur until February 7, 2008, at the earliest.

I don’t think we have any receipts so if that’s how they validate it, then we wouldn’t get any money. So we probably won’t bother.

iTunes store can kiss my ass

September 25th, 2007 admin Comments off

Amazon just released a new mp3 download service, drm free, music, use with whatever the fuck you want. Songs are cheaper too. $0.89, instead of $0.99. Not sure if all the songs are that price, but I searched for weird al, and pink floyd, both have songs for $0.89. Hmm cool the mp3 downloader is for os x, and windows. I can probably convince my mom into using amazon instead of the iTunes store. You don’t have to use their mp3 downloader, its just nice to have the option.
