Bought Airport Express

July 15th, 2009 admin Comments off

Bough a airport express from amazon, shouldn’t be as loud as MSI Nettop 100. Should sell MSI Nettop 100, will keep the hard drive if I do that though. It was only $107 with one day shipping, amazon prime is nice. Could use it for wireless too, then sell trendnet wireless N router, already have linksys router running dd-wrt, keeping that, it is only wireless G though. Guess it could act as a wireless bridge, but going to hook it up to receiver for music.

Got Trendnet router today

Got my Trendnet TEW-652BRP today. Haven’t had any problems with it yet, updated the firmware, which adds the ability to set static IPS to different MAC addresses. Well had one problem, put my mac’s MAC address in wrong, so I had no internet, but setting the IP manually let me get to router’s config, took a while to figure that out. Thought I put in everything right. Thought MAC address filtering made it so people couldn’t access router at all, it should disconnect not allowed MAC addresses. Not sure if all routers let you get to config page if the MAC isn’t allowed, maybe its a setting, you can probably disable router page from all wireless users. Oh yeah it seems to be smaller then the D-Link router it replaced, not much smaller though. Oh yeah you have to use firefox to update firmware, didn’t work in Safari, didn’t even seem to send the firmware using Safari, maybe it works in older Safari. Still using Safari 4 beta. The login seems to use some javascript encryption thing too, so don’t bother telling 1password to remember password, won’t work. Hmm guess you can’t tell it to not allow wireless clients to access router config. Pretty sure you can with DD-WRT, don’t think that works with this router, don’t care. Trendnet’s firmware seems to be stable, at least so far. Oh yeah the firmware tells you the router uptime too, just like DD-WRT, D-Link didn’t say that.

Comcast Spoiling for Fight With FCC

July 28th, 2008 admin Comments off

Hmm I wonder if comcast, will increase the price of their internet. Hmm we might have to switch to dial up, if it goes over $50 a month. Comcast already has a hidden bandwidth limit, I suppose they might have different plans soon, with different bandwidth limits, be bad news for those who use peer to peer applications. Or rapidshare.

Hmm the uptime for my computer is over 1 day, and only 3.80 GB gigs of in bandwidth, and 4.95 gigs of out bandwidth. Oh yeah iStat menus tells me all that info.

That’s only for my computer though, not sure what the total bandwidth used is.

Ahh for this month so far, the router says 117819 MB, which is about 115 GB for incoming bandwidth. Outing bandwidth is 24352 MB, which is about 24 GB.

Looks like we would be paying a lot of money, if they start doing that.

In June the incoming bandwidth was 59946 MB, which is about 58 GB. Outgoing was 5435 MB, which is around 5 GB.

Got to love the custom DD-WRT firmware.

Don’t upgrade DD-WRT to v24 RC5

November 23rd, 2007 admin Comments off

Settings from DD-WRT v23 SP2 aren’t compatible with v24 RC5, good thing I backed up my settings. Don’t think I’ll upgrade to v24 when its stable, as I don’t want to re enter all my settings. If you upgrade make sure you tell the firmware upgrade thing to reset to the default settings. Then you will have to re enter your settings, I tried restoring the settings on v24, but that didn’t work, I had to reset the router, and then downgrade to v23 SP2.

Getting pqi memory

June 1st, 2007 admin Comments off

Changed my mind once again, I’m getting a 1 GB stick of pqi, the exact same module that I have. Hopefully it’ll work in dual channel mode. Its $60 after shipping, might buy two more sticks, in the future. Even if it doesn’t run in dual channel, I should still notice a speed increase. Rather spend $60 then $140 or more. Just read a review on the same brand but faster ram, and they said it works in dual channel mode, not the x2 module either or whatever. So it should be able to.

pqi ram

Edit
Also getting a D-Link DWL-G730AP High Speed Wireless Pocket Router/AP – Retail. I like D-Link, I know their products work, as I use to have a wireless usb adapter, and my uncle has a cable modem by them, well he has my wireless usb adapter now, works fine on his mac. That thing can be powered by usb, which is sweet, now I don’t have plug it into the wall, as the 360 has usb ports. Now it can sit on top of the 360, instead of on the floor.
Getting it because my 11MB wireless adapter, isn’t that great, and my 54MB adapter, didn’t work last time I tried it. I can’t stream video very good with my 11MB adapter, music doesn’t stream that good either, but I think the music might be software related, using x360mediaserve for music. Oh yeah and about the bad reviews that say the signal is bad, it shouldn’t be a problem for me, I have a wrt54g with dd-wrt, and I raised the xmit power. Shouldn’t need to raise it anymore. Was going to buy another wrt54g but the newer ones are a pain in the ass to flash, so I said screw it, and got something you don’t have to flash.

Update
My grandma just ordered it, both of the above. Total price with shipping was $109.22. I bought two things, and saved $30.78. Two things is better then one thing, oh yeah I might be getting some more money tomorrow, doing more work for my grandma. I like pqi better then g.skill, because I never bought g.skill ram, and I have the exact same pqi ram in my computer, so it should work in dual channel. The ram has been working for a long time, probably over a year. Don’t really need PC3200 ram, cheaper to buy another PC2100 stick.

Sad newegg has it cheaper then D-Link, now thats a bargain.
see for yourself

Router MTU setting

March 27th, 2007 admin Comments off

I changed it from Auto to 1500, which seems to have made the internet faster. Was getting an MTU error on xbox live, haven’t tried it again yet. Should work now. Probably the latest firmware from dd-wrt doesn’t give the best setting for the MTU. So setting it to manual and leaving the default number it has in fixes it. Hopefully xbox live works now.

Update
Xbox live still doesn’t work, not sure why. Going to dd-wrt’s site now to look for a solution.

Update
Just going to reload the old firmware on it. Neither google or their site works, not going to waste all my time looking. Won’t be upgrading the firmware after I get it working again.

Update
Don’t want to reconfigure it, can’t restore the settings from the newer dd-wrt firmware on the older firmware. Oh well, guess I’ll have to figure out some other way to fix it.

Update:
The MTU setting wasn’t the problem, the problem was a crappy signal. So I changed the xmit power or whatever its called to 40. Now it connects fine.

Fix emule problems (If using DD-WRT v23 SP2)

March 7th, 2007 admin Comments off

Emule was making my whole internet slow. So I looked and found this. I changed the settings in Options | Connect | Hard Limit and Max Connections to 100. I would forward the ports it lists there too. Go to Applications & Gaming | Port Forwarding.
1
You can get your ip by going to Start | Settings | Network connects. And double clicking on your adapter. If using linux or osx, well your not using emule, but type in a terminal ipconfig. You should probably use a static ip address.

Now back to the router, go to Administration and scroll down till you get to IP Filter Settings (adjust these for P2P).
Change TCP timeout and UDP timeout to 900. I changed Maximum Ports to 1000. You don’t really need to change Maximum Ports to 1000, unless you keep the timeout settings the same. But then you might need more then 1000. Doesn’t really matter if I keep it at that. I haven’t seen it go over 150 for active ip connections. That info is on the Status page, under network. As of typing this its at 60 for active connections, not even 100.
2

So basically what was happening is the maximum number of ip connections was getting maxed out, and the timeout was way to long. Doing this could probably fix other problems, maybe voip will work better. Maybe this will fix my Uncle’s voip problems, that is if he tries the above.

Internet is faster

March 6th, 2007 admin Comments off

Well I upgraded the firmware on my router, to the dd-wrt sp2, wasn’t using any sp’s before. I had to reconfigure it, as I couldn’t login. I think somebody might of been stealing our internet, so I changed the wep key too. Also there’s only two mac addresses on the list now, to allow. People are watching t.v, so I can’t setup the xbox. The xbox isn’t on the list though. It will be if I ever get to use the t.v.
