Blew dust out of mac mini

June 30th, 2009 admin Comments off

Maybe it won’t freeze anymore now. If it still does, then it might be the hard drive, or USB wireless N card, or something else. Hard to say, if its the hard drive, I’ll wait till it dies, and then send it back if its still under warranty. Still have the old drive that came with mini.

Cirago BTA-6210 bluetooth adapter

June 27th, 2009 admin Comments off

Got my cirago BTA-6210 bluetooth adapter today from buy.com, bought it on their ebay store though. So far it is working way better then the internal bluetooth on my mac mini. Can use my bluetooth keyboard and mouse, and connect to my phone, without any lag now, before mouse would start lagging or get disconnected. Not sure if the 2009 mac mini is any better at bluetooth, won’t ever know, don’t plan on buying a new mac mini.

There’s a really shitty picture of it.

There’s another picture of it.

You can buy the cirago BTA-6210 bluetooth adapter on amazon too.

MacBook Pro or iMac

June 8th, 2009 admin Comments off

Hmm not sure if I’ll get one of the 13″ MacBook Pros or a refurbished iMac. The iMac would be faster and have better video, but cost a little more then a new 13″ MacBook Pro, I’d get the $1,499 MacBook Pro, if I got one probably. By the time I can buy a new mac, they’ll probably have the cheapest 15″ MacBook Pro refurbished… So maybe I’ll get one of those instead. I like the SD card reader the new MacBook Pro’s have, then I wouldn’t have to use my card reader. They should add a SD reader to the iMac. I could get the old iMac model 3 GHz for just a little more then the new 2.93 GHz refurbished model, but want the new model with support for 8 GB of ram. I think what I’ll do is just think about it but never buy either, that way by the time I make up my mind they’ll be new models, haha. Or I might get one if my mac mini dies and can’t be fixed cheaply. Oh wait I still have my MSI Nettop 100 with ubuntu, so won’t need to purchase new mac, if current mini dies, can just use that. It can’t play games, but neither can my mini.

Update
Will probably end up getting a MacBook Pro. Probably the cheapest 15″ MacBook refurbished though, they should have em refurbished in three or four months. I suppose if I decide to get off my lazy ass and get a job, then I might be able to get one before then.

Don’t need new mac yet

May 22nd, 2009 admin Comments off

My old mac mini still works and is fast enough for me. The only thing I can’t do is play newer mac games. I’ll just play games on my 360 and wii for now. Maybe I’ll consider getting new mac if starcraft 2 is ever released. Maybe I’ll buy an expensive SSD drive to speed it up even more. The 7200 rpm drive I have in it is fast enough though, so don’t really need a new drive. I will be getting a new superdrive, so I don’t have to use external drive to burn DVDs. Could always buy a cheap PC for gaming, if I want to play computer games.

New mac mini looks easy to upgrade

May 18th, 2009 admin Comments off

Might end up getting a new mac mini, and upgrading the ram myself. I upgraded my old one without a putty knife, though I damaged the case by doing it the way I did it. So maybe I’ll have to buy a putty knife if I do it myself.

Update
Maybe I won’t get a new mac, as my current mac mini just froze again. Seems to freeze to often, more then I remember my PC with ubuntu crashing. I might decide to try ubuntu on the aspire one I ordered before sending it back, maybe I’ll keep it, if it doesn’t freeze as much as mac.

Decent newegg bundle

May 16th, 2009 admin Comments off

Newegg has a DIY bundle for $330 or $295 after rebates. I like the case they put in that bundle, and I like the fact that they put a bundle together with pretty much everything you need. Well you might need CD drive, I have plenty of those. Not really needed anymore, can boot ubuntu from USB drive. But I do have a spare DVD burner in enclosure that I’d put in it, if I bought that bundle. Not sure if I should buy it or not, if there’s no tax maybe. With shipping its $354.02. Hmm probably no tax, just $24 shipping. Guess turning the rebates in might be worth it to get shipping money back, if you ever get rebates back. Decent price for a custom built machine with no windows on it.

I could always get a dell laptop with ubuntu on it, not this month though, would want to configure it, add more ram, better processor, better battery, and bluetooth. Not sure if I want new desktop or laptop or wait and get iMac. Or I could get a new mac mini, not sure if the “improvements” are much of an improvement over the mac mini I have. Not sure if I’d notice anything, maybe if they start offering 4 GB of ram with $599 one.

Update
Still haven’t decided, might buy the bundle though, as newegg accepts paypal now.

Update
Not buying bundle. Might buy an iMac from newegg in future though, no tax is nice.

Which computer to buy….

May 14th, 2009 admin Comments off

People like to ask me that question.

She wants a computer she can surf the internet on, download music and photos, burn CD’s or DVD’s, email, use excell and word on.

Computers that would work:

Mac Mini
Make sure you add 2 GB of memory, you can configure the cheapest one. Oh yeah but you’ll have to buy a monitor and stuff too…

Dell Inspiron 530s
I’d recommend getting one with a monitor. They have better specs. Vista is a memory hog from what I’ve heard. Make sure you get Intel Core 2 Duo for the processor.

Dell Popular Laptop Deals
Any of those would work, just make sure you get an Intel Core 2 duo processor and a 9 cell battery.

If you want to buy it locally, then Best Buy has some computers that will work too.

Dell – Inspiron Desktop with Intel® Coreâ„¢2 Duo Processor E7400

Gateway – Desktop with AMD Phenomâ„¢ Triple-Core Processor 8400

HP – Pavilion Desktop with AMD Phenomâ„¢ X4 9550 Quad-Core Processor

Compaq – Presario Desktop with AMD Athlonâ„¢ X2 4450e+ Dual-Core Processor

Dell – Inspiron Desktop with AMD Athlonâ„¢ X2 5000+ Dual-Core Processor

eMachines – Desktop with AMD Athlonâ„¢ X2 Dual-Core Processor 4050e

Pretty much any desktop will work… Just make sure it has at least 2 GB of ram, if buying a PC.

Upgraded Acer Aspire One

March 26th, 2009 admin 2 comments
From Inside Acer Aspire One

Upgraded the ram in my Acer Aspire One to 1 GB, voided the warranty doing so too. Used an old stick of ram from mac mini, upgraded that a long time ago. Just finally decided to upgrade Acer Aspire One. Touchpad no longer works, because I’m not skilled enough to connect it. Don’t care, can use external mouse. Need to replace SSD with a real hd or better SSD though. The SSD in it really sucks ass and slows it down, at least with OS X. Probably be fine in linux, but ideneb is more fun, I hear it’s against apple’s EULA, but I never read that, just clicked “accept”.

Update
Thought I got the touchpad hooked up right, might of killed the touchpad some how. Might have to buy a upper case/touchpad for aspire one on ebay. I’ll probably end up selling it after I fix it, will put default distro on it though. Might want to replace internal drive too before selling. Or maybe then I’ll keep it.

Update
Just going to sale each part by its self and as is. Changed my mind, going to sale the whole thing together as is.

Fuck it going to get iMac instead of mac mini

March 5th, 2009 admin Comments off

iMac is a better system then the mini, and well worth the extra amount. I’ll need a new desk if I want to use my other monitor though. Probably get the cheapest 24″ one, not sure though. Won’t be getting 8 GB of ram, that’s over $1,000 for just the ram… iMac’s are probably even harder then the mini to upgrade, I think I saw a guide on ifixit.com or something like that. But I won’t be opening it, maybe I’ll pay somebody in the future to upgrade it for me. Damn if you want faster processor you have to get more expensive one, wouldn’t mind a 3 GHz processor, don’t care about HD size. Maybe the $1,799 one then, almost 3 GHz, better video then the cheaper ones. Wait you can get $1,799 one with 3 GHz processor…

Update
Will probably order the $1,499 one from frys.com in May or June. I won’t be charged tax if I order from them…

Update
If you look at the design page for the iMac, you’ll notice it says “With iMac, details make all the difference. For example, because it’s made from a single sheet of aluminum, you won’t see any seams or screws except for a single compartment on the bottom that provides easy access to the memory slots.” Sweet so I can upgrade the ram in the future, when the price of 8 GB goes way down. Looked on ifixit.com, and you’ll see the memory compartment in step 4, the only step that matters to me.

Time to buy $599 mac mini?

March 5th, 2009 admin Comments off

Was just looking at DDR3 prices, and its cheaper then I thought, $150 from apple is way to much, you can get it cheaper from just about anywhere else. After looking at the article on macminicolo.net, it looks like I might not break it this time, maybe I should buy a putty knife too. Oh yeah if I upgrade it myself, I’ll put my faster/bigger drive in it too. I’ll just wait a while, and get it with a little faster processor, and maybe get ripped off and have them upgrade ram. Don’t like opening mini’s, pain in the ass, well unless you break it, then it doesn’t matter. My case is broken on old one too, so maybe not faster processor, just more ram.

New Mac Mini!

March 3rd, 2009 admin Comments off

Finally! Apple released a new mac mini. There was a rumor a long time ago saying there would be a new one in March, looks like that one was right. Can’t wait to go to the bank later today, thinking I’ll get $599 one, and maybe add the max ram. Maybe not DDR3 is expensive… Looks like this baby could easily drive two monitors, it has mini display port, and mini DVI… But I’m probably going to give my old 19″ monitor to sister, she’s still using a giant CRT.

Mac Mini on apple.com

Update
Not buying till May or June. Don’t want to upgrade it myself, so will buy it with max ram, maybe the little better processor. Hard drive size isn’t really an issue, have 1 tb external drive and a 1 tb linkstation, though I might get a little bigger one, probably should get at least 160 GB. Hmm 160 isn’t an option, current mini has 160 GB drive, I upgraded it myself though. Damn looks like the only drives they’ll put in it are 5400 rpm, the drive I upgrade my mini to is 7200 rpm. I’ll just get the default 120 GB drive then.

New mac mini next week?

January 3rd, 2009 admin Comments off

Rumors are that next week at Macworld Expo 2009 Apple will announce a new mac mini, various rumors about the specs, such as NVIDIA chips, and dual displays supported, also possibly dual drives. Depending on the specs of the new mini, assuming they release a new one, I may or may not buy it. If the integrated video is NVIDIA, then I’ll probably buy it, and if the dual displays is true, it’ll be even more tempting to buy. Though if Apple doesn’t release a new mini or the specs suck, I’ll buy a linux desktop, or build one myself. I’ll probably wait until next month to buy anything though.

Oh yeah and the reason I’m not going to buy an iMac is because I already have keyboard, mouse, and a new monitor I got for xmas. The only other mac that you bring your own stuff is the Mac Pro, and I’m not spending that much on a computer.

Mac mini’s anniversary is today

September 1st, 2008 admin Comments off

Now I’ve had my mac mini for a year, it still works as it should, though the internal sound doesn’t work, I broke that while upgrading it. That is why I bought a USB sound adapter sometime ago. Hmm I wonder if Apple will be announcing anything this month, guess I’ll find out by the end of the month. I think it only came with a one year warranty, so hopefully it doesn’t die next year, then it would have a lifespan the same as our xbox 360 did. Though it will probably last much longer then our xbox 360 did, as it was made by Apple, and not microshit.

Macs Averaging Twice the Price of PCs

August 7th, 2008 admin Comments off

What a useless false article, surprised google news links to it. I didn’t pay over $1,000 for my mac, I payed about $599. Pathetic article, don’t listen to morons, that don’t know shit. Mac’s may be expensive, but I’m glad that I won’t need to purchase another computer for sometime. The new windows vista OS, makes older computers useless, you will either have to stay with xp, or use linux, I’d personally be using linux on a normal pc. My mom’ s laptop can’t run windows vista, glad it can’t, that means I don’t have to be the one fixing it, though even if it could she probably wouldn’t upgrade it. She isn’t even done paying it off, and it can’t run the latest winblows OS.

Older ppc mac’s can run leopard, my uncles old iBook could run leopard, if I didn’t sell it. The person that bought it, might of put leopard on it. If the next version of OS X, still supports ppc macs, then that tells you something about apple. Apple likes to support their systems for a long time, non like microshit. Don’t forgot, microsoft has to lie to get people to like vista, they tell them that the OS their showing them is new, when its the crappy vista, they should mention how much the PC was, that is capable of running such a bloated OS. Well the price for new systems might of went down.

Just think about all the people who bought a windows computer a year before vista came out, and it can’t run vista. So their year old PC, can’t run the latest pathetic OS by microshit. Now do the world a favor, and stop buying windows PCS, buy a linux PC, or a mac. Or don’t buy a computer at all.

Oh yeah my uncle is still using a first generation macbook, and it runs leopard fine. Not having to buy a new computer as often, results in you saving money in the long run, and therefore you can buy a quality product, rather then a piece of shit. Ahh my uncle got his macbook in 2006. Now lets see how long he waits, until he buys a new one.

I got my mac mini almost a year ago, the anniversary is coming up in September.

Got my ram for mac mini

June 16th, 2008 admin Comments off

I got my ram for my mac mini today. I didn’t have any problems putting the ram in, though putting it back together was a pain. First I couldn’t plug the fan in, next there was no sound. Kept trying to get sound, and then the ribbon for the audio ports, that’s connected to a sound card broke. I was going to call around, and see how much it would be to fix it. But decided the audio on it isn’t very good anyways, so I bought a USB audio adapter from amazon. One of the reviews says the microphone input sucks, I don’t use a microphone so I don’t care. Damn now I can hear fan in the mac mini. The bad thing about no sound. Or is the fan my external drive? I don’t know.

Bought a new hard drive for mac mini

June 9th, 2008 admin Comments off

Just bought a new hard drive for my mac mini, bought it on ebay, free shipping and no tax. Bought a NEW Hitachi Travelstar 7K200 HTS722016K9SA00 Hard Drive. Argh I’m an idiot, should of bought it directly from buy.com, rather then their ebay store. Would of saved $10, if I payed by google checkout. Guess I’ll buy some crucial ram directly from buy.com, and save $10. Need the $10 in July, for the iPod touch 2.0 firmware. Oh yeah I also bought an Iron Man shirt on amazon.

Why does paypal and google charge $1.00? Now I only have $9.58, not enough for the update. Damn you paypal and google.

Testing sabayon linux 3.5 loop 1 on mac mini

January 23rd, 2008 admin Comments off

I downloaded sabayon linux last night, left it on over night. Burned the dvd today. First time I booted it, I couldn’t hit enter, as the keyboard wasn’t working. Read on apple’s forum to unplug everything but the keyboard from usb, and that worked. Then I plugged everything back in keeping the keyboard plugged in to the first usb slot, rebooted and the keyboard still worked. Then after it started up all I saw was a gray screen with a mouse pointer, so I clicked ctrl alt f1, and typed killall kdm, and then clicked ctrl alt f1 again, and typed gdm. I also read that kdm doesn’t work right on mac’s, read that on sabayon linux’s forum. After I logged in with “sabayonuser” and “sabayonuser” for the password, I connected to the internet by the wireless card, which worked right away, without doing anything. Just had to enter my wpa password. Sound didn’t seem to work, didn’t try to get it to work. Compiz works, kind of laggy on the live dvd, might work better if it was installed, no plans on installing it. After you enable compiz, you have to logout and log back in, for it to work.

Maybe I should upgrade the ram in my mac mini

January 19th, 2008 admin Comments off

Its only $48 from crucial for 2 GB of memory, the max my mini can have.

How to open the mac mini

They say you need two putty knifes, but probably possible with only one.
Don’t think we have any putty knives, my grandma might. Don’t have $48 either. The shipping is free, but after tax its $52.12. Still pretty cheap, cheaper then the memory in my other computer, and its not DDR2.
Just looked on apple’s site, if you configure the mac mini, they charge $150 if you want 2 GB of ram. I wouldn’t pay $150 for 2 GB of ram, that’s a rip off.

Update
Got it open without a putty knife, I did do a little damage to the bottom of the case. Don’t care though. It still works, and I don’t look at the bottom either, as it isn’t upside down all the time. The damage I caused to the case, actually made it so it will be easier to open in the future. Oh yeah and it still works, as I’m typing this from my mac.

Finally moved my email from my old computer to my mac mini

September 16th, 2007 admin Comments off

My whole profile folder for thunderbird was over 100 MB. Wouldn’t fit on my thumb drive, because I already have other stuff on it, didn’t want to delete anything. So I put it in a shared folder, and after I finished copying it, I deleted it from the shared folder. Good thing I use thunderbird, it works in windows, linux, os x.

Messing around with iWeb

September 13th, 2007 admin Comments off

Have nothing better to do, so I’ve been messing around with iWeb, which came with my mac mini. Made apple.vanvalkinburgh.org, which I made in iWeb. You can publish the site to a folder, so you don’t have to have a .mac account. iWeb also has a google adsense widget, you put your email in, and either your zip, or the last five digits of your phone number, and then it validates it with google. No copying code anymore, yes if you know somebody else’s email, and zip or phone number, then you can put their ads on your site, you don’t get access to their account though, just the code.
