Hmm so MSI Nettop 100 is 64bit capable?

July 5th, 2009 admin 4 comments

The MSI Nettop 100 has an intel atom 330 processor, searched google for “is intel atom 330 64 bit”, and a forum said that if “cat /proc/cpuinfo” has the Lm flag, then it does 64bit. Now downloading xubuntu 64 bit version to see if it works. Intel’s site says it is 64 bit too.

Output of cat /proc/cpuinfo below.

Which computer to buy….

May 14th, 2009 admin Comments off

People like to ask me that question.

She wants a computer she can surf the internet on, download music and photos, burn CD’s or DVD’s, email, use excell and word on.

Computers that would work:

Mac Mini
Make sure you add 2 GB of memory, you can configure the cheapest one. Oh yeah but you’ll have to buy a monitor and stuff too…

Dell Inspiron 530s
I’d recommend getting one with a monitor. They have better specs. Vista is a memory hog from what I’ve heard. Make sure you get Intel Core 2 Duo for the processor.

Dell Popular Laptop Deals
Any of those would work, just make sure you get an Intel Core 2 duo processor and a 9 cell battery.

If you want to buy it locally, then Best Buy has some computers that will work too.

Dell – Inspiron Desktop with Intel® Coreâ„¢2 Duo Processor E7400

Gateway – Desktop with AMD Phenomâ„¢ Triple-Core Processor 8400

HP – Pavilion Desktop with AMD Phenomâ„¢ X4 9550 Quad-Core Processor

Compaq – Presario Desktop with AMD Athlonâ„¢ X2 4450e+ Dual-Core Processor

Dell – Inspiron Desktop with AMD Athlonâ„¢ X2 5000+ Dual-Core Processor

eMachines – Desktop with AMD Athlonâ„¢ X2 Dual-Core Processor 4050e

Pretty much any desktop will work… Just make sure it has at least 2 GB of ram, if buying a PC.

Trying Backblaze

April 14th, 2009 admin Comments off

Blackblaze is out of beta now, so I’m trying it. Get 15 days free, probably not enough to backup all my data. If this thing makes me lag while playing 360 online, then I won’t be paying for it. Probably will make me lag, stupid comcast.

backblaze

Update
Somebody on twitter said to cap upload since it’ll probably make it lag. I think that’s what the “Throttle” does, move it closer to faster network, and hopefully that means backblaze will use less bandwidth, and leave more for everything else. Could always setup QOS, but to lazy, and I think that worked anyways. At first I moved the throttle to faster uploads, and my network monitor said I was uploading at around 60 KB/s, and nows its staying under 40 KB/s, shouldn’t lag now. Oh yeah using the network monitor that comes with iStat menus.

Oh yeah the only bad thing is, it looks like I’ll have to do a new complete backup when I get a new mac. Another good reason not to buy a new mac, or I could just wait till I get a new mac to buy backblaze. That might be the best solution.

I was right about the throttle thing, just look at their speed test page. Hmm maybe I should move it backup to the default…

“A connection of 6998 kbps upload would backup:

73807 MB in a day”

Stupid power boost. That fast upload only lasts for a short time. I think it use to only be for downloads though.

Fuck it going to get iMac instead of mac mini

March 5th, 2009 admin Comments off

iMac is a better system then the mini, and well worth the extra amount. I’ll need a new desk if I want to use my other monitor though. Probably get the cheapest 24″ one, not sure though. Won’t be getting 8 GB of ram, that’s over $1,000 for just the ram… iMac’s are probably even harder then the mini to upgrade, I think I saw a guide on ifixit.com or something like that. But I won’t be opening it, maybe I’ll pay somebody in the future to upgrade it for me. Damn if you want faster processor you have to get more expensive one, wouldn’t mind a 3 GHz processor, don’t care about HD size. Maybe the $1,799 one then, almost 3 GHz, better video then the cheaper ones. Wait you can get $1,799 one with 3 GHz processor…

Update
Will probably order the $1,499 one from frys.com in May or June. I won’t be charged tax if I order from them…

Update
If you look at the design page for the iMac, you’ll notice it says “With iMac, details make all the difference. For example, because it’s made from a single sheet of aluminum, you won’t see any seams or screws except for a single compartment on the bottom that provides easy access to the memory slots.” Sweet so I can upgrade the ram in the future, when the price of 8 GB goes way down. Looked on ifixit.com, and you’ll see the memory compartment in step 4, the only step that matters to me.

New Mac Mini!

March 3rd, 2009 admin Comments off

Finally! Apple released a new mac mini. There was a rumor a long time ago saying there would be a new one in March, looks like that one was right. Can’t wait to go to the bank later today, thinking I’ll get $599 one, and maybe add the max ram. Maybe not DDR3 is expensive… Looks like this baby could easily drive two monitors, it has mini display port, and mini DVI… But I’m probably going to give my old 19″ monitor to sister, she’s still using a giant CRT.

Mac Mini on apple.com

Update
Not buying till May or June. Don’t want to upgrade it myself, so will buy it with max ram, maybe the little better processor. Hard drive size isn’t really an issue, have 1 tb external drive and a 1 tb linkstation, though I might get a little bigger one, probably should get at least 160 GB. Hmm 160 isn’t an option, current mini has 160 GB drive, I upgraded it myself though. Damn looks like the only drives they’ll put in it are 5400 rpm, the drive I upgrade my mini to is 7200 rpm. I’ll just get the default 120 GB drive then.

Monitor or Buffalo 1 TB NAS

November 3rd, 2008 admin Comments off

Trying to decide whether I should buy a Acer 22″ LCD monitor for $166.99 or a Buffalo Live Linkstation 1 TB for $219.99. The Buffalo Live Linkstation 1TB seems to be the cheapest at buy.com. Its $279.99 on newegg.com, usually newegg is the cheapest, yeah they have monitor for a little less, but I don’t like newegg, their shipping is slow. Hmm don’t really need a new monitor, that one might be to big for desk anyways. To wide that is. Don’t really want to rearrange anything, and also don’t want to risk getting any dead pixels, rather buy monitor from amazon.com. They probably would let me return it.

Update
Didn’t take long to decide, bought Buffalo 1 TB Linkstation Live. Got second day delivery for $5.49.

Update 11/4/08
I probably should of selected free shipping, as if you don’t order before 4 PM EST, then it takes 1-2 business days for them to ship it. So they might not even ship it until tomorrow, stupid EST time zone.

Oh yeah since its passed 4 PM EST, I doubt they will ship it today, fuckers. So I should get it on Friday. Next time I’ll save my $5.49.

Looks like the Buffalo I bought is the new model, and has a bittorent application built in. Read on their forum.

Another post says that private trackers don’t work, that sucks, so probably won’t bother using the torrent client. Private trackers are faster, such as pretome.net. Can’t invite anybody, not enough cr. Cool they just gave me some free cr, oh yeah and it looks like the admins or one of the staff people, support Obama, that makes them an even better tracker, Obama better win. Or I might have to move to Canada, or be an illegal alien in Mexico.

Time to buy a new monitor?

October 11th, 2008 admin Comments off

Damn I hate newegg, they have a Acer 20″ LCD monitor for $159.99 + free shipping. Amazon has a Acer 22″ monitor for $182.99 or $23 more after rounding both up. Not sure if I have enough room on desk for 22″ but that would probably be a better deal, already have a 19″ non widescreen acer monitor. Hmm I don’t really need a new monitor, my monitor still works.

One review on the 20″ one, said they saw it at bestbuy. I went to bestbuy, saw their monitors, and I don’t remember seeing any acer monitors, or at least not for $160. Saw some crappy westinghouse though, didn’t really look at the price of the westinghouse, or look at em.

Looking at some AOC monitor on newegg, got to love reviews like the below.

Pros: Inexpensive

Cons: Cheap, item DOA, wasted my efforts and my Client’s time.

Other Thoughts: I love Samsung, Chi-Mei, Acer, HannsG LCDs. Saw AOC, $180 for a 22″ LCD and Free shipping, give it a try. Ended up the item DOA. Will not Buy AOC again.

I got a acer aspire one laptop that had an annoying problem, sent it back to amazon, and got a new working one. Not sure what the point in their review is, other then they got unlucky like me, except they didn’t even bother to get replacement, what a dumbass. I’m pretty sure newegg has a good return policy, probably not as good as amazon, I love amazon’s fast free shipping, newegg’s shipping is slow, rather you pay or not. That is why I don’t want to ever order anything from newegg. Would be better to pay an extra $23 and get free shipping from amazon and a bigger monitor. Think I’ll keep waiting, until the price goes down even more.

Close your curtains…

June 15th, 2008 admin Comments off

I was walking (on a… BUSY street) in front of your house (with an American Flag out front) today, you had your curtains open and you were doing “something”, sitting there on your couch. :-) Exhibitionist? I wanted to just walk in on you… should I have? What would you have done? Does anyone else live there?

I’m pretty sure you saw me (I walked by like four times!)… Tell me what I was wearing? Do you usually do that there and around the same time (around 4 – 5pm)? Wow!! I’ll have the courage next time! :-) (I drove by later and you were outside with your weed-eater, so you won’t have any doubt it’s you)

Quote from craigslist. My mom just ordered me a vga cable for the xbox 360, now I can play the 360 on my monitor. Nobody will see me downstairs in my room. If some lady walked in my house, I don’t know what I’d do. Probably have an anxiety attack. Hmm actually I’d probably be having an anxiety attack before they walked in, if they walked past my house four times. I’d probably close the curtains, grab a kitchen knife…

Desk is setup

Jeff came over and fixed it, I just finished moving everything off my old desk, to the new desk.Nice not having to put a keyboard on my lap. I like the monitor farther back, easier on the eyes.
