No more windows or sabayon on it, I wiped it clean, and put mythbuntu on it. Finally got the picture to look right, made the screen resolution 640×480. Now I only need an ir blaster, or a tuner with a ir blaster, so it can change the channel on the cable box. With comcast you can tell it to read a show, all it does is change the channel for you, but then you also have to set it to read in mythtv. Kind of a pain, setting it to record two times. My tuner did have a ir blaster, but the crappy cable broke. Kind of want a pchdtv card, it supports digital tv. Only problem is I don’t have any money, so I won’t be buying anything.
If you want free tv guide data for mythtv, then you can follow my how to here.

I downloaded sabayon linux last night, left it on over night. Burned the dvd today. First time I booted it, I couldn’t hit enter, as the keyboard wasn’t working. Read on apple’s forum to unplug everything but the keyboard from usb, and that worked. Then I plugged everything back in keeping the keyboard plugged in to the first usb slot, rebooted and the keyboard still worked. Then after it started up all I saw was a gray screen with a mouse pointer, so I clicked ctrl alt f1, and typed killall kdm, and then clicked ctrl alt f1 again, and typed gdm. I also read that kdm doesn’t work right on mac’s, read that on sabayon linux’s forum. After I logged in with “sabayonuser” and “sabayonuser” for the password, I connected to the internet by the wireless card, which worked right away, without doing anything. Just had to enter my wpa password. Sound didn’t seem to work, didn’t try to get it to work. Compiz works, kind of laggy on the live dvd, might work better if it was installed, no plans on installing it. After you enable compiz, you have to logout and log back in, for it to work.

The price was lowered to $15 for 6 months on the 13th. Won’t do me any good signing up, because I have no way of receiving the data, can’t update mythtv very easily in sabayon linux.

Why would I buy parallels? Just testing virtual box anyways, probably won’t actually use it. I could probably run tversity without any problems. Vmware worked for a while in linux, but I never got it to work with sabayon linux. Windows XP runs faster in virtual box on my mini, then on my other computer with vmware.

Damn another new version of sabayon linux. Was released the other day. Don’t think I’ll update, because its a pain. Need to update mythtv, so I can eventually use the new schedules direct service.
Sabayon Linux 3.4 Revision F
Getting a mac mini tomorrow, in store pickup, no dealing with morons. I need a way to use my other computer, without buying a kvm, or unplugging everything, and plugging it into the other one. Don’t want to spend any money, on a kvm if I don’t have to. Vnc kind of sucks, testing it local on the same computer, don’t really like it.
“NX transparently tunnels Linux multimedia channels. Not only does NX play KDE and Gnome system sounds, but you can listen to MP3s played on the server and local workstation simultaneously.”
Hmm wonder what will happen when running the client and server on the same machine.

Damn it takes a long time to compile, gentoo based distros don’t have binary packages, so you have to compile everything. The reason I shouldn’t of used sabayon linux.
Update
Won’t be using freenx, as its to much of a pain to configure. To bad I’m not using a binary distro, or one of the supported distros.
Update
Got it to work, by using the official packages on their site.
Was playing tremulous, and a whole bunch of people were talking about how great ubuntu is. If you compare the speed of ubuntu to a clean install of windows, or one without viruses, and all the stuff stupid people download, then you’ll notice most likely windows is faster. You would have to tweak ubuntu to make it faster, recompile stuff possibly. To much of a pain, sabayon is probably faster then windows, and a hell lot faster then ubuntu. Dream linux is fast too. I would never buy a computer with ubuntu installed, unless it was really cheap, and then I’d wipe it, and put something better on it. The dell laptops with ubuntu cost more then the windows laptops, and have slower speeds, they start at 1.5 GHz. The 1.5 GHz laptop costs around $700, last time I checked, that’s a rip off. You could buy a windows laptop for less, and install linux on it. But the hardware might not work, which is the only downside. There’s a laptop that if you install anything other then vista on it, then you’ll void the warranty. It was either a everex or acer, saw it on newegg. So if something non software breaks, you’re screwed.
Nice its going to cost money for the replacement. I’m not paying, I don’t have to pay for zap2it, so why should I have to pay for their service? Guess that means I have to manually set stuff to record. Which I probably won’t do, so I won’t be recording tv. Will save me a lot of time when the new sabayon linux version comes out, won’t have to emerge mythtv again. I lied, I probably will pay for it, or ask for $15 to pay for it.

On the first command still. You can find the xdelta files here. You have to have the 3.4a iso already though.
Found that from the release post. They didn’t say what all those commands did, so I had no idea, that I could use them to make a new iso. Farther down in the thread it says what it does. You can download those files from some of the other mirrors too, just click the xdelta folder. Still takes some time though, just not as long as downloading the iso again. Unless you have a really slow hard drive, then it might not matter.
Update
Burning the iso right now.
Update
The upgrade uninstalled everything. Which really sucks, now I have to reinstall mythtv. Now I Know not to upgrade. I don’t think it deleted the database files, hopefully it didn’t. Don’t want to re setup mythtv too. I think the upgrade was worth it though, now opening tabs in firefox doesn’t have an annoying delay.
Just downloaded it too. Now downloading the new version, I’ll try the upgrade feature. I saw 3.4e on the server, but I thought it was a beta or something, there was no post on their site, until today, saying its officially released. Should of downloaded it, as it has the same date, it had before when I looked at it. Cool found a fast mirror here, the first comment has a direct link to the file. Try to avoid bittorrent because it slows my internet down. Would have to limit the upload speed to 5 or 10 kb. Plus that download is faster then bittorrent has ever been for me. I don’t open ports either, to paranoid. They have that mirror on the official download page, just didn’t try it.
Fast mirror
Update
Canceled download, I’ll wait until the next release, or the release after that. Not enough new stuff to care about, and Entropy isn’t stable yet. But you can install Entropy, without downloading 3.4e. If you get an error about remote.conf not existing, then run touch /etc/entropy/remote.conf.

Should of said n for the last one. But then it wouldn’t of run.
Sabayon linux seems a little to fast, for a live dvd. Now I’m going to copy my home folder, to my other hard drive. Screw ubuntu, sabayon is fast without doing anything. Oh yeah the 3d stuff is on too, using the AIXGL or whatever its called, no slow down what so ever. So this sucker should fly once I install it.
Update
Damn it got some error while copying files. Guess I’ll just copy the stuff I need. Its using compiz, not beryl, thats probably why its faster. Don’t like the transparency, in the middle of something, then the window, goes transparent, and I can’t see crap. To bad the icon for compiz disappeared, as kicker crashed. Kicker reloaded though. Kicker is part of kde, if you didn’t know.
Hmm going to about:plugins in firefox, says it has flash, but flash doesn’t load. Doesn’t say I need a plugin either. Restart firefox, and flash works.
Downloading the dvd, will try the live dvd, and see if it runs good, and if I still like it. Then I’ll have to copy my home folder, to my other hard drive. If I install it, I’m going to make a home partition, so it won’t be such a pain switching linux distros. Then I’ll copy all my data back over.
I tried it a while ago. But it didn’t work, as if I remember correctly, it was using ip6. Which my router doesn’t support. So if I wanted to I’m sure I could get it running now. Wouldn’t be that hard, or at least I don’t think it would be. I probably won’t install it anytime soon. Though it probably would be fast, as it’ll only have the crap you need. Gentoo is fast, even sabayon linux, which has crap you don’t need. Sabayon linux is based on gentoo, in case you didn’t know. Think I rather install sabayon linux again, less work to do. And its fast, also it has a sexy interface. Thinking about linux, I should get my linux blog up again.
Arch linux
Sabayon linux
Linux blog (Backup, just converted it to wordpress.)
I’m liking fedora better then sabayon.
Whats better:
- Fast without doing anything what so ever
- Rpm based (Portage you have to compile everything basically.)
- Lots of packages
I’ll add more reasons as I think of more.
To do list: (Will do after I upgrade everything. Which takes a while. Damn the download size will be around 900 MB.)
Install nvidia driver
Install beryl
Install flash perhaps
Make it mount my windows partition on boot
Make a new beryl video (After I finish all of the above.)
Hmm why did I install gnome programs? I should of unselected them, just like I unselected gnome.
