Hmm so MSI Nettop 100 is 64bit capable?

July 5th, 2009 admin 4 comments

The MSI Nettop 100 has an intel atom 330 processor, searched google for “is intel atom 330 64 bit”, and a forum said that if “cat /proc/cpuinfo” has the Lm flag, then it does 64bit. Now downloading xubuntu 64 bit version to see if it works. Intel’s site says it is 64 bit too.

Output of cat /proc/cpuinfo below.

Magic Jack still doesn’t have my area code…

June 10th, 2009 admin Comments off

magic_jack_no_numbers

Looks like now they have no area codes available in WA. They let you change your number once for free, so I keep checking to see if a local number is available, have some 253 number, not my area code. No phone hooked up to it, nor is the computer turned on that its plugged into. Using virtualbox in ubuntu on a MSI Nettop 100, to run their bogus software. Don’t want to keep mac on 24/7, guess I could, not sure how stable the mac software is though. Not sure why I see ads on tv, since they don’t even offer area codes in my state anymore. Oh yeah I emailed them asking when my area code would be available, below is their response. Oh yeah to find their email, you have to search google, it is Dan@magicjack.com.

We apologize that your area code is not represented right now and we
are doing our best to add as many area codes as possible.
Sorry for the vague reply, but we will keep updating our lists as
fast as we can. Thank you.

Looks like their running out of numbers, and not adding anymore. Ahh well it was only around $30 on ebay. I should sell that linksys phone adapter I bought that I don’t need, was going to use it with vitelity, but changed my mind. Oh yeah you will be able to port a number to them “sometime in 2009″. Guess you don’t really need a local number, but then people that use the shitty local service, will get charged when calling you.

Instead of everyone switching to magic jack, how about get a skype phone adapter, both require your computer to be on 24/7, difference is skype is free. If everyone was using skype, you wouldn’t need to pay anything, its free to call skype people from skype. Then they’d probably start charging for it. Or pay more and get something that doesn’t need your computer.

MacBook Pro or iMac

June 8th, 2009 admin Comments off

Hmm not sure if I’ll get one of the 13″ MacBook Pros or a refurbished iMac. The iMac would be faster and have better video, but cost a little more then a new 13″ MacBook Pro, I’d get the $1,499 MacBook Pro, if I got one probably. By the time I can buy a new mac, they’ll probably have the cheapest 15″ MacBook Pro refurbished… So maybe I’ll get one of those instead. I like the SD card reader the new MacBook Pro’s have, then I wouldn’t have to use my card reader. They should add a SD reader to the iMac. I could get the old iMac model 3 GHz for just a little more then the new 2.93 GHz refurbished model, but want the new model with support for 8 GB of ram. I think what I’ll do is just think about it but never buy either, that way by the time I make up my mind they’ll be new models, haha. Or I might get one if my mac mini dies and can’t be fixed cheaply. Oh wait I still have my MSI Nettop 100 with ubuntu, so won’t need to purchase new mac, if current mini dies, can just use that. It can’t play games, but neither can my mini.

Update
Will probably end up getting a MacBook Pro. Probably the cheapest 15″ MacBook refurbished though, they should have em refurbished in three or four months. I suppose if I decide to get off my lazy ass and get a job, then I might be able to get one before then.

Vitelity rocks

May 20th, 2009 admin 1 comment

Signed up for vitelity earlier today, mainly so I can mess around with asterisk. I really like their customer site, under support they have all the settings you need to get asterisk working. I’m using ubuntu with freepbx. Uncle set me a link to this script, which install everything you need. That’s for an old version of ubuntu but it still works. Using my cell phone with asterisk works fine for me, using a Nokia E63, already has SIP compatibilities built in. Might switch our home number to vitelity, will talk to mom about it later. Bought a Linksys VOIP SPA2102 SIP ATA Adapter Sunrocket UNLOCKED on ebay, guess if I don’t switch her over, I can buy a cheap phone to plug into it. Only bad thing about the GE 28021EE1 on frys.com is the shipping is more then the phone, shipping is $8, phone is only $4.99, not sure if they shipped uncle’s phone yet… Oh yeah and frys.com charges tax, at least in my state. Probably better off buying a V-Tech CS5111 5.8GHz Cordless Phone from amazon.

Dell Latitude 2100

May 19th, 2009 admin Comments off

Hmm dell just released a new netbook that you can configure with a touch screen, and you can get it with either ubuntu or windows. Hmm when clicking link it wants to know my segment though… I guess I can’t buy it then. I’m not in any of those segments.

Hmm just noticed the Dell Mini 10v is only $299… Damn it, not even going to open aspire one now, just going to send it back. You can get either ubuntu or windows on it. Wait if you add 6 cell battery same price, but you can get wireless N, so better deal, no need to use USB wireless N if you want wireless N. You can get it built in on the dell…

New mac mini looks easy to upgrade

May 18th, 2009 admin Comments off

Might end up getting a new mac mini, and upgrading the ram myself. I upgraded my old one without a putty knife, though I damaged the case by doing it the way I did it. So maybe I’ll have to buy a putty knife if I do it myself.

Update
Maybe I won’t get a new mac, as my current mac mini just froze again. Seems to freeze to often, more then I remember my PC with ubuntu crashing. I might decide to try ubuntu on the aspire one I ordered before sending it back, maybe I’ll keep it, if it doesn’t freeze as much as mac.

ASUS Eee PC 901

May 17th, 2009 admin Comments off

Thinking about buying an ASUS Eee PC 901, or some other netbook with linux. Had aspire one, but that one had small SSD low ram, wasn’t worth it. Now there cheaper and better, Eee PC 901 even has a better battery then my aspire one had. Would be nice to have bigger screen then touch to browse web while watching tv, and a full featured browser. Maybe apple will release a new iPod touch with bigger screen… Probably not anytime soon. I think I rather buy a netbook from amazon, easy return policy, fast free two day shipping. Depends if ubuntu will run on this without any problems, need to look into that. Ubuntu netbook page. Hmm looks like the HP works pretty good on it. Wait that HP model that works, can’t even find it. But the 1000 that HP lists on site has a sound bug. Doesn’t look to hard to fix, HP mini has real HD and bigger screen then the Eee PC 901. Hmm strange their site says different then what amazon has… Pass on HP mini, want one that comes with 6 cell battery. Hmm maybe this aspire one.

Update
Bought Acer Aspire One AOD150-1165 10.1-Inch Sapphire Blue Netbook – 6 Cell Battery instead of ASUS Eee PC 901. Will put ubuntu on it, once I get it. Same price that I payed for old aspire one that had crappy SSD drive, this one has a real hard drive. Hmm maybe I should of bought that newegg DIY bundle instead, ahh well I can buy that next month. haha. Or send netbook back and buy it. Don’t want that bundle, rather get a quad core processor, if I get AMD. So I’d have to manually pick everything out. Ahh well I have 30 days to try netbook out, if I don’t like it I can send it back.

Update
If I get it and it doesn’t work, or ubuntu is to much of a pain to get working on it, I’m going to send it back to amazon and get refund, have 30 days. Also I’ve read that acer’s supports sucks, and to get an rma is a pain, also heard from somebody else that somebody they know has an acer and they break down a lot. Must of got lucky with last Aspire One, good thing I sold it on ebay.

Decent newegg bundle

May 16th, 2009 admin Comments off

Newegg has a DIY bundle for $330 or $295 after rebates. I like the case they put in that bundle, and I like the fact that they put a bundle together with pretty much everything you need. Well you might need CD drive, I have plenty of those. Not really needed anymore, can boot ubuntu from USB drive. But I do have a spare DVD burner in enclosure that I’d put in it, if I bought that bundle. Not sure if I should buy it or not, if there’s no tax maybe. With shipping its $354.02. Hmm probably no tax, just $24 shipping. Guess turning the rebates in might be worth it to get shipping money back, if you ever get rebates back. Decent price for a custom built machine with no windows on it.

I could always get a dell laptop with ubuntu on it, not this month though, would want to configure it, add more ram, better processor, better battery, and bluetooth. Not sure if I want new desktop or laptop or wait and get iMac. Or I could get a new mac mini, not sure if the “improvements” are much of an improvement over the mac mini I have. Not sure if I’d notice anything, maybe if they start offering 4 GB of ram with $599 one.

Update
Still haven’t decided, might buy the bundle though, as newegg accepts paypal now.

Update
Not buying bundle. Might buy an iMac from newegg in future though, no tax is nice.

Virtual Villagers works in crossover games

May 9th, 2009 admin Comments off

virtual_villagers

Didn’t know there was a mac version, as I tried the trial from amazon games. Bought it on sale for $0.98. They charge $20 on their site, so no point in buying it directly, rather use windows version in crossover games. And save about $19. Funny new review says amazon’s downloader thing froze their computer. Haha that’s what you get for using a PC, oh wait this is for PC only. Amazon downloader works perfectly in crossover games, they should give ubuntu a try, and get free trial of crossover games, doubt it’d crash whole computer if it crashed, just crossover games. Or better if you use ubuntu, try wine, its free and based on crossover games…

Oops killed ubuntu on MSI Nettop 100

April 23rd, 2009 admin Comments off

Looks like I killed ubuntu while trying to upgrade it using alternative CD method. Now going to put the iso on a thumb drive, and try booting from it. The upgrade thing looked like it crashed or something, so I tried killing it, and ended up trying to reboot. It didn’t look like it did anything, I guess it did. Ahh well, maybe don’t tell it to include internet updates. Was going to do the online update, but it seems as their servers are slow right now, a lot of people must be trying to upgrade all at the same time. Using parallels to put ubuntu on thumb drive, no mac program that I’m aware of that does it, suppose I could try dd, but that doesn’t usually work for me.

Update
Just reinstalled ubuntu, its working now. Takes longer then normal to download packages though.

Bought Airfoil

April 17th, 2009 admin Comments off

Just bought Airfoil for $25. There’s a linux version of Airfoil Speakers, which works in ubuntu. So now I can use iTunes instead of MPD for playing music through receiver. Playing videos doesn’t seem to work very good, there’s a 2 second delay, if you read their FAQ. Not a big deal. iTunes through receiver without airport express is good enough for me. Could output internet radio to it too, like pandora.com.

Oh yeah to get it to work in ubuntu, you need to install libmono-cli or something like that. Wait its “libmono2.0-cil” or “libmono1.0-cil”. I have both installed. Also have “libmono0″ installed. and a whole bunch of others, just use sudo aptitude install libmono2.0-cil. And hopefully it’ll install everything it needs..

airfoil

Update
To get airfoilspeakers to work in ubuntu run the following command:
sudo aptitude install libavahi1.0-cil libmono-winforms2.0-cil libmono-system-runtime2.0-cil

MSI Wind Nettop’s fan isn’t running 24/7 anymore

April 10th, 2009 admin Comments off

The first time I set it up, with the drive that died, I put xubuntu on it, and the drive was in the 3.5 bay. Now I have ubuntu on it, not sure if that makes any difference, perhaps xubuntu lacks something the full ubuntu has. Also mounted the drive in the optical bay with a Addonics Hard Drive Mounting Bracket. Now I don’t have to turn it off at night, can keep it on 24/7. The fan does go on sometimes when sleeping, but then the fan turns off, so its not a big deal.

Had to buy VLC Remote App for iPod touch

April 9th, 2009 admin Comments off

The free version doesn’t let you browse, so I had to buy it for $0.99. Boxee is to buggy for me in ubuntu, so not going to bother with it anymore. Using MPD(music player daemon) for music playing, using a client called Theremin on Mac, and there’s a free App called MPoD for the iPod touch.

Boxee kicks ass

March 18th, 2009 admin 3 comments
From Boxee Setup
From Boxee Setup

Put xubuntu and boxee on my MSI Wind Nettop 100, plays 720p perfectly fine, at least everything I tried, tv doesn’t do 1080p, does 1080i though. There’s a bug in boxee, it crashes sometimes when playing an audio file, really annoying. Oh yeah put the boxee remote app on iPod touch, and changed wireless N router to mixed mode, so I can use iPod touch with boxee. Also bought a D-Link gigabyte switch, so I can have linkstation and MSI Wind Nettop 100 connected by gigabyte speeds. That came yesterday too, and works fine. It has a rebate according to amazon, but to lazy to fill that out, don’t care about rebate.

Bought MSI Wind Nettop 100 Desktop PC Barebone

March 13th, 2009 admin Comments off

Just bought a MSI Wind Nettop 100 Desktop PC (1.6 GHz Intel Atom Dual Core N330 Processor, Barebone) Black from amazon.com, not sure what I’ll do with it yet. I wonder if it could record HD, probably not. Don’t even know if my USB eyetv card works in linux. Going to plug it into netbook, and see what linux sees it as. Also bought 2 GB of ram, the max it can have. Already have hard drive, have CD drives, won’t be putting any CD drives in it though. Might put xubuntu on it, or maybe mythbuntu, to see if it can handle HD. Should get it all on the 17th, free two day shipping for prime members.

Linux distros tested on Acer Aspire One

March 7th, 2009 admin Comments off

Currently I’ve tested the following distros on the acer aspire one:

Ubuntu & Xubuntu
Xubuntu is faster, both are easy to get working, just download a custom kernel from aspireonekernel.com.

Dream Linux
Currently that’s what I have on it, everything seems to work, didn’t do any tweaking. Seems somewhat slow, probably because I haven’t done any tweaking, to bad it doesn’t do it for me. Used the OEM installer, as I couldn’t see the buttons in the regular installer. I think I prefer xubuntu over this, so probably won’t tweak it. Perhaps I’ll try the recently released zenwalk linux 6.0.

Ubuntu 8.10 64 bit how to get serious sam the first encounter to work

January 14th, 2009 admin Comments off

The simple answer is to run ssam_lnx.dynamic, which is in ssamtfe/Bin. Found that on a russian forum, used google translate…

Full instructions below.

First install 32 bit libraries and linux32.
sudo apt-get install ia32-libs linux32

Now go download serious sam the first encounter installer from here.

Now make the installer executable.
chmod 755 Desktop/serious.sam.tfe_1.05beta3-english-2.run

Insert disk and run the installer, you can double click it and select run, or enter below in terminal.
Desktop/serious.sam.tfe_1.05beta3-english-2.run

After you install it open the ssam_lnx.dynamic in ssamtfe/Bin, which can be found in your home folder.

Parallels opengl support in ubuntu sucks

January 14th, 2009 admin 1 comment

For the heck of it I tried running serious sam in ubuntu in parallels, well I guess parallels doesn’t support opengl very good in linux, only in windows. Figured if it worked, then it would work better, but I guess I was wrong. I might be able to play serious sam the first encounter on aspire one, but to lazy to try. Still waiting for laptop from system76.com, hasn’t been 8 business days yet.

Screenshot below of serious sam in ubuntu using parallels…

Bought Pangolin Performance from system76.com

January 6th, 2009 admin Comments off

Damn I hate tax, would of been cheaper if there was no tax. Got the laptop instead of desktop, cause the HDMI made it to tempting to resist, guess the video card isn’t as good as new macbook’s, but still decent, and not intel. Video is better then the $999 macbook, but the $999 macbook has a little faster processor. Has ubuntu on it too. Best deal I could find, don’t like dell’s crappy selection. Hmm now what to do with netbook… Maybe put it on ebay, low on cash now. Good thing I have no bills, otherwise I’d have to file for bankruptcy. Oh yeah I got the default configuration, didn’t change anything.

Now it’ll take longer for my money to get piled up, darn. Hmm I could always make it a hackintoush maybe, not sure how well OS X would work on it, or I should say, I don’t know what hardware would work in it, which is the reason I probably won’t do that. Linux has more free software anyways then OS X.

Pangolin Performance on system76.com

Update
It is in the “manufacturing process”, and they will ship it within 8 business days. Read on their forum, that it only took em two days to ship somebody else’s system out. Shouldn’t take to long, didn’t change anything.

Mythbuntu how to update mythtv to svn version

February 9th, 2008 admin Comments off

If you enabled the 0.20.2 fixes build repository, then run the commands below, before upgrading to the svn version.

sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/mythbuntu-gutsy.list

First you need to remove the current mythtv packages, otherwise the svn version will conflict with it.

sudo apt-get remove mythtv-*

Now do the below:

Add the apt key for the mythbuntu svn repository.

wget http://mythbuntu.org/files/EEED06D0.gpg && sudo apt-key add EEED06D0.gpg && rm EEED06D0.gpg

Now add the mirror for the mythbuntu svn repository.

echo "deb http://weeklybuilds.mythbuntu.org/mythbuntu-trunk/ubuntu gutsy multiverse universe restricted main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/mythbuntu-gutsy.list

or the uk mirror:

echo "deb http://uk.weeklybuilds.mythbuntu.org/mythbuntu-trunk/ubuntu gutsy multiverse universe restricted main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/mythbuntu-gutsy.list

Now update your package list.

sudo apt-get update

Now install the mythtv packages.

sudo apt-get install mythtv-*

These instructions may work for the official ubuntu distribution and other ubuntu based distributions.

Some of the instructions above are from mythbuntu’s site.
